Grindr Dating App
Big data is both the worst and the best of our future. While this technology has enormous potential, it comes with a lot of fears, of which data protection is clearly part of it. But the recent news makes us fear the worst: after Facebook, it is the turn of the gay dating application Grindr to exceed the limits. Explanations.Grindr is 3.6 million daily active users. Created in 2009, this application boasted of being "the world's largest gay dating network". Today, she has expanded her audience to the entire LGBT community.
Like Facebook in recent weeks, Grindr is in the eye of the storm. The application would have allowed third-party companies to access private data from its users, including their HIV status.
These companies are two in number: Apptimize and Localytics. They are responsible for testing the application. It is in this context that they received Grindr's data. But the bad buzz is launched, the outcry is general, Grindr is obliged to explain.

And it is on the social network Tumblr that one of the persons in charge of the application chose to express itself. For Scott Chen, their goal "has always been to promote the health and safety of its users." He confirms that Grindr is actually working with Apptimize and Localytics, but that both companies "are subject to strict contractual terms".Moreover, users have the choice or not to share their HIV status, "so it's up to them to be vigilant," says Scott Chen. Still, he acknowledges that "sometimes, this data may include information about location and HIV status because it is information that is in the application." Grindr is indeed the first application in the world to have used the geolocation of smartphones.
The Axios news site has been able to interview Grindr's security manager and assures that the application has stopped sharing users' HIV status with other companies. It recognizes somehow the fault committed. Scott says, however, that "Grindr has never sold or will sell personally identifiable information - particularly HIV status data or the latest test date - to third parties or advertisers" in reported by the Huffington Post.
This was also promised by a certain Mark Zuckerberg in 2009. Still the protection of user data was considered paramount.
Still, Norwegian researchers at SINTEF revealed via BuzzFeed that the shared data of Grindr users made it possible to identify them. Since then, the political world has seized the file on the other side of the Atlantic. US Senator Ed Markey said that the protection of data "is not limited to banking data or passwords." For him, "these data can endanger LGBT Americans".
On the side of the voluntary sector, we are at the bottom aghast. Grindr's answer did not convince them in any case. "You have betrayed the LGBT community," for example, wrote a netizen under Grindr's defense.
This is in any case a new example that perfectly illustrates the dual potential of big data. The pile side and the face side.
It is no secret that I have a very deep and personal relationship with God. I have pushed and resisted that relationship this past year through all the bullshit I have had to go through living with Herpes but once again, God is bigger than my stubbornness and broke through that outbreak cold sore and all I had Genital Herpes. For me personally, hearing over and over how I am not good enough has really invaded my mind in the worst way possible. I completely shut down and I was just waking up like is this how life going to end this temporary herpes outbreak “fuck everybody with herpes if you know what I mean” but let's be honest here...It is a cowardly to say no to herbal medicine. It is fear based. And it is dishonest to what my heart wants.
